‘We have a good case’ – NFF General Secretary remains confident about World Cup qualification
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed confidence that FIFA will rule in Nigeria’s favour over its petition against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) following November’s World Cup play-off defeat.
The Super Eagles lost on penalties at the Moulay Hassan Stadium, a result that appeared to end their hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
NFF confident over FIFA petition
Weeks after the defeat, the NFF confirmed it had formally lodged a complaint with FIFA, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the decisive fixture.
While FIFA has yet to issue a ruling, the move has drawn criticism from some quarters, including former Super Eagles captain and coach Sunday Oliseh, who questioned pursuing qualification through administrative channels.
However, NFF General Secretary Dr Sanusi Mohammed insists the federation would not have proceeded without strong belief in its case.
“We have a good case,” Sanusi told Brila.net. “We don’t venture into what we know is an exercise in futility.”
He added: “As far as we are concerned we have a good case and we are waiting for what FIFA will say as regards to the complaints we have logged.”
What is at stake as FIFA deliberates
Nigeria’s petition centres on claims that DR Congo breached FIFA eligibility rules, particularly relating to dual nationality.
DR Congo have denied any wrongdoing and, for now, remain listed as Africa’s representatives in the inter-confederation play-offs.
Those play-offs are scheduled for March 26 and 31, 2026, in Mexico, involving DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, Suriname, New Caledonia and Bolivia. The tournament will decide two final World Cup qualification spots.
Should FIFA uphold Nigeria’s complaint, the Super Eagles could yet be reinstated, opening a late and dramatic pathway back into contention for a place at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
