Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman is on the brink of joining Atletico Madrid
Ademola Lookman’s long-awaited Atalanta exit appears to be reaching its final chapter, with Atletico Madrid now firmly in pole position to land the Super Eagles star.
Reports from Italy suggest a deal is edging toward completion as the Spanish side close in on a major late-window signing.
Atletico finally crack Atalanta’s resistance
Lookman has been on Atletico Madrid’s radar for months, but Atalanta had stood their ground, turning away interest from multiple clubs. That stance has now softened.
According to reports, La Dea have accepted Atletico’s second offer, allowing talks to accelerate as the transfer window enters its final stretch. Earlier approaches from Madrid fell short, including an initial €30 million bid that was quickly rejected for failing to meet Atalanta’s valuation.
The turning point came after complications in negotiations with Fenerbahçe. The Turkish club had been leading the race and even reached a verbal agreement to meet Atalanta’s €40 million asking price, structured as €35 million guaranteed plus €5 million in add-ons.
However, disagreements over payment terms stalled progress. Atletico moved quickly, returning with an improved bid that matched Atalanta’s demands, pushing the deal forward. Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reports that an agreement worth over €40 million is now in place, with only final details left to complete.
Lookman gives green light as deal nears completion
With the clubs aligned, Lookman’s decision has become the final piece. Atletico are believed to have offered improved personal terms, which the 28-year-old is happy to accept.
Despite a late push from Fenerbahçe, including a stronger salary proposal, Lookman has reportedly chosen to prioritise the move to Madrid, favouring La Liga over other options on the table.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has added weight to the reports, stating that Atletico are closing in rapidly. “Atlético Madrid are closing in on Ademola Lookman deal tonight!
“The player has informed all parties about his desire to prioritise Atlético proposal despite Fenerbahçe improved salary bid. Verbal agreement on €40m deal. Formal steps expected today then… here we go,” Romano said.
If completed, the move would see Lookman take on a new challenge in Spain, stepping into a high-profile environment as Atletico prepare for the next phase of their season.
