You're still our champion: Nigerians show support for Tobi Amusan despite losing world title
Tobi Amusan got the love and support of Nigerians worldwide despite losing her world title at the World Championships in Budapest.
Amusan finished sixth in the women's 100m Hurdles final in 12.62s, a far cry from her world title-winning performance at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon.
The 26-year-old ran under pressure as the reigning champion and the hopes of millions of Nigerians to get a medal. Unfortunately, she couldn't hit the maximum speed gear that saw her win the world title last year.
Jamaica's Danielle Williams was the surprise winner, as she reclaimed her world title from 2015 in a Season's Best (SB) of 12.43s (-0.2), edging Jasmine Camacho-Quinn in 12.44s for silver, while Keni Harrison settled for the bronze medal in 12.46s.

8 years after her first #WorldAthleticsChamps gold medal, 🇯🇲's Danielle Williams strikes golden 100m hurdles glory again 🤩 pic.twitter.com/0IXbt6wQ5h
Despite losing the title and not getting a medal, Nigerians aren't disappointed but instead have directed positive vibes Amusan's way, proclaiming that the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be her moment of glory again.
Don’t worry yourself. Tobi Amusan will be back. The Naija spirit never dies.

Dear Tobi Amusan @Evaglobal01 , you are the brightest star in Nigerian sports at the moment and this little setback won’t change that.

Can’t wait to see you shine at the Olympics in Paris next year. I will be there screaming and wildly rooting for you.
I am so proud of you.🫶 pic.twitter.com/6dtWfXR9JX
Others also provided understanding that her preparations already were deterred coming for the championship because of her alleged Anti Doping Rule Violation case, which she was cleared just two days before the start of Budapest, and her mental state wasn't at maximum percent.
Tobi Amusan needs all the support she can get, from the Federation and other stakeholders. She’s been put through a lot, mentally, physically and emotionally. She will come back stronger but we must rally round this world beater! pic.twitter.com/8JMlUWLL0d

Tobi Amusan didn't make the podium and I'm not surprised.
She finishes 6th in the Women's 100m hurdles final. To be honest, that's okay considering the circumstances.
Always proud of you, Tobi Express. ❤️#WorldAthleticsChampionships https://t.co/ODEYd1lTrB

Amidst all the controversies and distractions, she was able to make it to the final, which is a big win in itself.
I'm super proud of her.
She needs our love and support. pic.twitter.com/tlKBoxicsO
For all the distractions before the World Championships, making it to the final is as good as a podium finish....better luck next time Tobi Amusan @Evaglobal01. You are still our World Champion and World Record Holder.#WorldAthleticsChampionships. pic.twitter.com/UeKH2KVG4g

You are my champion. The biggest win this year was that you came out after the investigation with your head high and clean.
Today is a little setback. You will be coming back stronger girl!
Failure is not falling down, it is staying down and God…
In all, Nigerians showed they can be massively supportive of their national heroine in good and bad times, and their World Record holder will be back sooner than later.
