'You overcomplicate things' — Amorim chides British media after Ed Sheeran row

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has played down the incident following his debut as Red Devils boss, which involved UK pop superstar Ed Sheeran.

Last weekend was Amorim's first match as Red Devils boss, a disappointing 1-1 draw against Ipswich. While many inferences have been drawn from the performance and result, it was the little drama that ensued after the game that caused a stir. 

Parked with the Sky Sports panel, the 39-year-old Portuguese was being interviewed before Ed Sheeran, a British music icon and minority owner of Ipswich, gatecrashed to exchange pleasantries with one of the panellists, Jamie Redknapp. 

The ensuing reaction accused the ‘Shape of You’ crooner of being disrespectful, and he took to social media to apologise, saying, “Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday, didn't actually realise he was being interviewed at the time, was popping to say hi and bye to Jamie (Redknapp). Obviously feel a bit of a b**lend, but life goes on. Great game though; congrats to all involved.”

Amorim spoke of the incident in the pre-match press conference ahead of his first European game in charge of Manchester United, the Europa League clash against Bodo/Glimt. 

According to him, it had been blown out of proportion, suggesting that he did not take it to heart, before quipping that Roy Keane—who was a panellist on the day—was the true star in the mix, a playful dig at Ed Sheeran. 

“I think you sometimes overcomplicate things. It was nothing. It was a simple question, or saying hi to one of the commentators,” Amorim defended Ed Sheeran. 

“For me, it was nothing; I just was thinking about the game. And I was with Roy Keane; Roy Keane was the real star in that panel, so for me, it was really, really okay; it was nothing special.”
