Yohan Blake awarded Order of Distinction, joining Jamaican sprinting royalty

Jamaican sprinting icon Yohan Blake has been officially recognized for his immense contributions both on and off the track, receiving one of the nation's highest honors.

The decorated athlete was awarded the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander, placing him alongside fellow legends like Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

The ceremony, held at King's House on National Heroes Day, October 20, 2025, celebrated Blake's exceptional athletic career and his significant philanthropic work. The award acknowledges his journey from a challenging childhood to becoming the second-fastest man in history and a dedicated humanitarian.

In response to the honor, Blake expressed his deep appreciation. "Thank you to the Government of Jamaica for this prestigious award, it really means a lot," he stated.

Blake's commitment to giving back is channeled through his YB Afraid Foundation, which focuses on supporting vulnerable children across Jamaica. The foundation has already adopted three children's homes—Pringle Home in St. Mary, Mount Olivet Boys’ Home in Manchester, and the Jamaica Baptist Union Garland Hall Memorial Children’s Home in St. James—providing for over 50 children, with plans to adopt four more.

Reflecting on his past, Blake credited his difficult upbringing for shaping his character and driving his mission to help others. "If I should live that life again, I would, because it shaped me into the person that I am," he shared. "There’s a grey cloud over [a lot of] people’s heads, and I’m a person who shines light."

The sprinter, who once had to choose between school fees and food, uses his story to inspire young people facing similar hardships. He encourages them to dream big and not be defined by their circumstances.

"I put my cup where I cannot reach it because, in life, we do grow and one day you are actually going to reach it," Blake explained. "Your life is in your hands… If we keep on planting and planting, the crop will come."

With this national recognition, Blake's influence continues to grow beyond the world of track and field. He now aims to expand his humanitarian efforts internationally, carrying his message of hope and perseverance to a global stage.
