Spanish winger Lamine Yamal made a powerful statement by flatly refusing to participate in the traditional post-match farewell lap, walking straight down the tunnel following Spain's 0-0 friendly draw against Egypt.
What happened
Yamal’s walkout was a direct protest against vile, Islamophobic, and xenophobic chants emanating from sections of the Spanish crowd at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona.
Throughout the evening, far-right spectators created a deeply hostile environment, loudly whistling the Egyptian national anthem before repeatedly singing, "Who doesn’t jump is a Muslim.”

While the chants were not directed at Yamal, the Barcelona star is a practising Muslim, having observed the recently concluded Ramadan fasting, and rightly felt aggrieved.
Spain's systemic racism crisis
Yamal’s sheer discomfort and frustration were palpable throughout the fixture. While on the pitch, he was visibly uncomfortable as the bigoted chants echoed around the stadium.
After being substituted by head coach Luis de la Fuente in the second half, his demeanour on the bench grew increasingly despondent; cameras captured the teenager sitting in a stony, furious silence as the abuse continued unabated.
This disgraceful episode once again places a spotlight on Spain's deeply entrenched, systemic issues with racism in football.
Yamal himself is sadly no stranger to this abuse, having previously been the target of horrific racist insults from rival fans during domestic fixtures, placing him alongside other frequent victims of Spanish crowd abuse, like Real Madrid's VinÃcius Júnior.
