Why Chukwueze started against Man United after his mother's death - Fulham coach Silva reveals
In a display of immense mental fortitude, Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze led the line for Fulham at Old Trafford this afternoon, just days after the tragic passing of his mother, Mrs. Sarah Chukwueze.
The Nigerian international’s inclusion in the starting XI against Manchester United came as a surprise to many, given the heartbreak he suffered in the early hours of Thursday morning.
However, Fulham head coach Marco Silva revealed that the decision to play was entirely the player's own, as he sought solace in the game he loves.

“He wanted to stay with us”
Speaking ahead of the clash, Silva praised Chukwueze’s professionalism and explained the club's role in supporting him through a dark week for Nigerian football.
“It was his own decision,” Silva stated. “We gave all the support and we will keep giving all the support he needs in this moment. Part of the support is allowing him to feel free, to allow him to travel and be with his family.”
Despite the offer of immediate compassionate leave, Chukwueze chose to remain in London to prepare for the match.
“From the first moment, he said he would stay with us and control and support his family from London. He is with us and will be an important piece in the way we want to play,” the manager added.
A pillar of support remembered
Mrs. Sarah Chukwueze was widely recognised as the driving force behind Samuel’s career, often credited by the winger for her sacrifices during his early days in Umuahia.
Her passing comes at a particularly somber time, occurring just 48 hours after teammate and Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi lost his father in a road accident.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) issued statements of condolence, acknowledging the "vital and supportive presence" Mrs. Chukwueze provided to one of the nation's brightest stars.
By stepping onto the pitch at Old Trafford, Chukwueze followed in the footsteps of many great athletes who have used sport as a sanctuary during times of grief.
His presence provided a tactical boost for Fulham, who have relied heavily on his pace and creativity since his move from AC Milan.
