‘We want to start hoping and praying’ - Former Super Eagles player insists Nigeria cannot qualify for the World Cup
Nigeria are in an extremely challenging situation and are almost certain that they will not qualify for the World Cup in consecutive years.
Eric Chelle's side are currently six points behind South Africa on the qualification table after failing to defeat the Bafana Bafana with two games left to play.
The Super Eagles barely missed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, so unless a miracle happens, they will miss another one.
Ejiofor speaks on Super Eagles World Cup chances
Ejiofor, who previously played for the Super Eagles, has expressed his displeasure at how bad the World Cup qualifiers' performance was.
“How do we want to qualify for the World Cup? Where is the opportunity? We didn’t use it,” the former Super Eagles player said, as reported by Brila.
“When the chance is very slim, we want to start hoping and praying. From day one, we weren’t serious about it.
“I don’t think the players understand they are competing to play in the World Cup. It is so sad because their attitude towards the game isn’t encouraging.
“Many of them haven’t gone to the World Cup in their career, and this would have been the first time. I don’t know what they were thinking.”
Ejiofor said another generation of gifted Nigerian players could not benefit from playing in a World Cup since their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup are slim.
