‘We fought for every ball’ - Chelle defends Super Eagles' performance following defeat to Morocco

Chelle defends Super Eagles' performance
Nigeria's head coach, Eric Chelle, has defended his pre-match assertions about his team's readiness, insisting he was not bluffing despite a painful penalty shootout loss to Morocco in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

The Super Eagles' journey for a fourth continental crown came to an end in Rabat on Wednesday night after they were defeated 4-2 on penalties following a goalless 120 minutes of play.

Missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup was a tough break, and the Super Eagles also missed a huge chance to grab a fourth AFCON title with that loss.

The Super Eagles will play for the bronze medal, where they will face Egypt in the third-place playoff.

In his post-match analysis, Chelle conceded that his squad was lacking in several key areas against the tournament hosts.

"We missed a lot of things: the intensity, the technicality, the movement," the coach admitted while evaluating his team's performance against the Atlas Lions.

"Morocco deserved this victory, but our state of mind was good," he stated. "We fought for every ball. Before this game, I spoke at the press conference and said something.

“Everybody tried to say this was a bluff or that I was a liar. I know my group, and for sure it was not easy for us, but the players gave us a good response with their state of mind."

Chelle also expressed his frustration with the outcome, particularly after dedicated practice sessions on spot-kicks.

"They fight on every ball, and it's difficult because we lose again in the penalty session," he added. "It's crazy because we work a lot during all of the training sessions, but this is football. We have to accept that and continue to work."

Although their title hopes are over, the Super Eagles' campaign continues. The three-time African champions will now prepare for the third-place playoff against Egypt on Saturday, aiming to conclude their tournament on a high note.
