Rooney, who spent 13 years at Manchester United, remains the club’s all-time top scorer with 253 goals in 559 appearances.

During his illustrious spell, he won five Premier League titles, the 2008 UEFA Champions League, and the 2017 Europa League, among several other honours.

What Rooney said

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former England captain explained that he enjoyed being involved in the build-up play more than simply finishing chances.

“I had two seasons when I played as the number nine, and I scored 34 goals in both seasons, but I was bored,” Rooney revealed.

He added, “I was coming off the pitch, scoring goals, and just wasn’t enjoying it. I liked to play football and get involved in the game. We were winning, but I wanted to play a little bit more.”

Rooney’s versatility was one of his greatest assets, as he regularly dropped deep into midfield or operated as a playmaker behind the striker.

Despite his goal-scoring prowess, he preferred contributing to the overall rhythm of the game rather than staying fixed in the forward line.
