Barcelona beat Espanyol to confirm league title

Barcelona put the finishing touches on an outstanding LaLiga triumph with a 4-2 win at the home of neighbours Espanyol to confirm their status as Champions of the 2022/23 LaLiga season but were unable to fully enjoy their title celebrations on the pitch.

As the players made their way to the centre circle to commemorate their 27th league title, they were interrupted by Espanyol fans who invaded the pitch to protest the lack of respect shown by the Blaugrana players for jubilating wildly in the stadium of their heated rivals.

Barcelona players forced to flee pitch after invasion by Espanyol fans

Barcelona players were forced to abandon their celebrations and head to the safety of the dressing rooms to continue their title celebrations.

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez said he understood the emotions of the Espanyol fans, as it must have been deeply upsetting to watch their fierce rivals celebrate a LaLiga title in their stadium while they are currently locked in a desperate relegation battle.

However, Barcelona captains Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets did not share Xavi’s empathy towards Espanyol and had to be physically restrained by stadium security as they tried to confront the angry fans who had invaded the pitch and spoilt the title celebrations.
