‘This is considered disrespectful’ - Yamal reacts angrily after Spanish chants against Muslims
The pre-World Cup warm-up match between Spain and Egypt concluded in a disappointing goalless draw for the Spanish side.
Egypt secured a noteworthy result thanks to a resolute defensive performance that held La Roja. However, the event was overshadowed by unacceptable behaviour from the crowd.
Reports in the Spanish media detailed that some home supporters repeatedly chanted, "Whoever doesn't jump is a Muslim." This slogan has been widely denounced as an insult to Islam.
Yamal reacts to Muslim chant
In response, the Spanish Football Federation, Espanyol FC (whose stadium hosted the match), and the Spanish government have all denounced the incident and initiated an investigation to identify and penalise those responsible.
Yamal, who is Muslim, took to social media to express his disgust, labelling the individuals behind the chants as "ignorant" and "racist".
"I am a Muslim, praise be to God," said Yamal, who was substituted at halftime. 'Yesterday, I heard chants in the stadium saying, "Whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim." '
“I know these chants were directed at the opposing team and not at me personally, but as a Muslim, this is considered disrespectful and unacceptable."
He continued, "I realise that not all fans are like that, but to those who chant such things: using religion as a means of mockery makes you look ignorant and racist."
The young star concluded with a call for respect in the sport. "Football is meant to be enjoyed and cheered on, not to insult others because of their identity or beliefs.
“Finally, I would like to thank the fans who came to support us, and we’ll see you at the World Cup."
