South Africa’s Teboho Mokoena was among the Bafana Bafana players who impressed in their ill-fated AFCON 2025 campaign and he is now attracting interest from clubs abroad.

Mokoena, one of the most experienced players in Hugo Broos’ team, had a big impact during South Africa’s run to the Round of 16 of the 2025 tournament in Morocco even though he was not on the scoresheet like at the 2023 edition.

The Mamelodi Sundowns star is one of the most dynamic and intelligent midfielders playing their trade on the African continent and it seems the South African giants might have a battle to keep hold onto him.

Why Do Al Ahly Want Mokoena?

This is following multiple reports that record African champions Al Ahly have put him on their list of targets. Al Ahly are reportedly preparing for a midfield shakeup in the coming months and with the future of Malian midfielder Aliou Dieng uncertain, Mokoena has become a subject of interest.

Dieng is entering the final months of his contract and it is not certain if he will extend his stay with the Cairo Red Devils and that is why Mokoena is being lined up in case of a parting of ways.

Pricing Mokoena away from Sundowns will, however, not be an easy task as the perennial South African champions rate him so highly and would demand a massive fee for a player whose contract runs up to June 2029.

The Free State-born defensive midfielder has been at Sundowns since joining from SuperSport United in 2022, winning four league titles, while he has made 156 appearances, scoring 13 goals and weighing in with 12 assists.
