Super Eagles star Lookman finally dumps Atalanta: Atletico Madrid confirm transfer coup
Ademola Lookman has finally escaped Atalanta’s grip, with Atletico Madrid confirming the blockbuster signing of the Super Eagles star after the Italian club repeatedly blocked his departure since last summer.
The Nigerian winger’s move to Spain represents a hard-fought victory after months of frustration, with Atalanta consistently refusing to let him leave despite Lookman making clear his desire for a new challenge.
The 28-year-old, who famously wrote his name into history with a Europa League final hat-trick in 2024, is moving in a deal worth a total package of €40 million.
The breakthrough agreement
The saga ends with Lookman getting his wish and Atalanta finally accepting they couldn’t keep an unhappy star indefinitely, though the messy departure leaves a bitter taste after what should have been celebrated as a successful partnership.
Atletico Madrid officially announced the breakthrough on Sunday, confirming that the Nigerian international has already arrived in the Spanish capital to finalise the move.
“Agreement with Atalanta over the transfer of Ademola Lookman,” the club posted on their social media page. “The Nigerian forward is already in Madrid. The agreement is subject to passing his medical and formalising his contract.”
A new chapter under Simeone
Lookman’s arrival provides a massive boost to Diego Simeone’s attacking options as the club looks to bridge the gap at the top of La Liga.
Sources indicate that Lookman prioritised the move to the Metropolitano despite late interest and a lucrative offer from Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

The deal, which consists of a €35 million fixed fee plus €5 million in add-ons, will see Lookman become the first Nigerian to feature for the Rojiblancos senior team.
With the medical tests scheduled for Monday, Lookman is expected to put pen to paper on a long-term contract, ending one of the most protracted transfer sagas in recent windows.
