Ronaldo will join Messi, play till 44 — Ex-United star backs CR7 to keep breaking records
Manchester United icon Teddy Sheringham sees no reason why Cristiano Ronaldo cannot follow in the footsteps of Lionel Messi and take his legendary career to Major League Soccer.
Reflecting on Ronaldo’s continued dominance in Saudi Arabia, the 1999 Treble winner suggested that the "Portuguese GOAT" has the physical longevity to ignore the traditional retirement age entirely.
While most players hang up their boots in their mid-30s, Sheringham, who famously competed in the Premier League until he was 40, believes Ronaldo is built differently.
Ronaldo backed to play beyond 2026 World Cup
"I do [see him pushing into his mid-40s]," Sheringham told GOAL. "It's all about keeping yourself fit and healthy and staying away from injuries.
He's got a proper body; he’s like a machine that looks after itself on the football pitch. I think he might go to 44."
Ronaldo is currently approaching his 41st birthday and remains under a lucrative contract with Al-Nassr until 2027. However, Sheringham is convinced that a final chapter in the United States is "without a doubt" the next logical step once his journey in the Middle East concludes.
"I don't think he will return to Europe," Sheringham added. "I think he would do it in America... He might wait until he is 44 or 45 before he goes."
