Real Madrid new boy shocks fans with praise for Barcelona legend
Franco Mastantuono has officially been unveiled as a Real Madrid player, but his first press conference is making headlines for more than his excitement to join Los Blancos.
The teenage sensation from River Plate stunned Madrid fans by publicly naming Lionel Messi, a Barcelona legend, as the greatest player of all time.
Mastatuono determined to make his mark at the Bernabéu
The 18-year-old Argentina international sealed a blockbuster move from River Plate ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup but only joined after his birthday on August 14.
Presented alongside club president Florentino Pérez, Mastantuono expressed his determination to break into Xabi Alonso’s plans this season, saying, “Several clubs were interested in signing me, and I have the utmost respect for them all.
“I spoke with Luis Enrique, and he was very clear with me. I congratulate him on winning the title last night.”
The teenager credited Alonso’s influence on convincing him to sign for Real Madrid, adding, “I spoke with [Alonso] and it was very important. He did a lot and gave me a lot of confidence to fulfil my dream. I’m going to give it my all. I’m going to be there in whatever way I can to help the team.”
Messi praise raises eyebrows among Madrid fans
While his excitement for Madrid was clear, Mastantuono also boldly acknowledged his admiration for Barcelona icon Lionel Messi.
“Since growing up, I’ve seen Real Madrid win the Champions League, and that was my memory. It was incredible. I hope there are many more. Now is to put on the jersey and win titles,” he said.
Then came the moment that caught attention: “Messi meant a lot to Barcelona and to Argentinians… For me, the best player in the world is Messi. I’m Argentine, and for me, he’s the best.”
Messi tormented Real Madrid during his 17-year-stay in LaLiga, scoring 26 goals against Los Blancos, so Mastatuono’s praise for his compatriot has understandably raised eyebrows among fans.
