Real Betis vs Atletico Madrid: Lookman enjoys dream debut as Rojiblancos hammer Antony and Co
Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman started off on the best foot for Atletico Madrid, scoring one and assisting another goal as the Rojiblancos secured a stunning 5-0 win over Real Betis.
Lookman scored Atletico's third goal, and provided the assist for the fourth by Antoine Griezmann to cap off an excellent debut.
Real Betis vs Atletico Madrid: How it happened
Real Betis came into the tie flying at home, winning their previous five matches, and nearly struck early when Abde Ezzalzouzi curled narrowly wide inside six minutes. Atlético Madrid, however, quickly took control.
From a 12th-minute corner, captain Koke delivered to the near post and Dávid Hancko powered in the opener. The visitors pushed for more, with debutant Ademola Lookman missing a clear one-on-one soon after.
Betis failed to capitalise on missed chances of their own, and Atlético punished them ruthlessly. Giuliano Simeone doubled the lead after a slick move down the left, before Lookman made amends eight minutes before half-time, cutting inside and finishing a rapid counter-attack to open his Atlético account.
The hosts showed fight after the break, with Ezzalzouzi testing Juan Musso, but Atlético always looked dangerous. Just after the hour, Lookman turned provider, setting up Antoine Griezmann, whose effort squirmed past Adrián for the fourth. Diego Simeone rotated his side late on, yet the intensity remained, and substitute Thiago Almada added a fifth seven minutes from time.
The emphatic win sealed Atlético’s place in the last four, marked their 11th victory in the last 14 meetings with Betis, and handed the hosts only a fourth home defeat of the season.
