Switzerland international and Inter Milan defender Manuel Akanji has expressed pride in his Nigerian roots, revealing that his connection to the West African nation remains a big part of his identity.

What Akanji said
Speaking in an interview with Inter TV, Akanji said that although he represents Switzerland at the international level, his Nigerian heritage continues to shape who he is.
“Obviously, I play for the Swiss national team, but I’m still really proud of being Nigerian. It’s been a long time since I’ve been back to Nigeria," he said.
The 29-year-old also revealed the personal meaning behind one of his tattoos, an eagle, symbolising his bond with Nigeria and its national football team.
“My tattoo? It’s the eagle from the Nigerian national team. It’s something I carry with me,” he added.

Manuel Akanji has been a key figure for Switzerland since making his senior debut in 2017, representing the nation at multiple major tournaments, including the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, and UEFA Euro 2020 and 2024.
Renowned for his consistency and leadership in defence, he was named in the UEFA Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament after helping Switzerland reach the quarter-finals.
