Stephen Warnock has described Enzo Maresca as a "volatile" candidate who would represent an unnecessary risk for Manchester United as they search for Ruben Amorim’s successor.
Amorim was dismissed just 5 days after Maresca was shown the door at Stamford Bridge, and many have touted the Italian as a potential replacement at Old Trafford.
Warnock believes that Maresca’s tendency to clash with club officials makes him a dangerous choice for a United side already reeling from internal instability.
“It’s interesting, isn’t it?” Warnock told Metro.
“All these managers know exactly what they’re getting into when they sign up, then win a few games and start feeling more confident and powerful. And then, out of nowhere, they want everything to change, and they want even more power.”
Reports suggest that Maresca’s friction at Chelsea stemmed from disagreements over the sports science department and player rotations.
Warnock warned that United cannot afford another manager who might cause friction in the press room or the boardroom.
“From United’s perspective, do they want another volatile manager who ends up at press conferences acting the same way?” Warnock questioned.
“If they mess up again and the club doesn’t change, it might take another 10 years before they start fixing things. So, he’s not my favorite, but I can definitely understand why he might be on someone’s list.”
