On Thursday, July 25, 2024 in an opening Group C women's football match of the Paris 2024 Olympics, Spain, the world champions, overcame Japan 2-1 in Nantes.
After 13 minutes, La Roja was behind due to an incredible free kick by Aoba Fujino.
Spain quickly pulled together, and Aitana Bonmati, the winner of the Ballon d'Or, had them tied in less than ten minutes.
In the second half, Japan played solid defense and offered little offensive danger while Spain controlled the ball and had numerous opportunities.
But in the 74th minute of the Group C opening, Bonmati produced a beautiful one-two with Mariona Caldentey to score the winning goal.
Later today in Bordeaux, the Super Falcons and Brazil will square off in the second Group C game.
As a result, Bonmati became the first Spanish woman to score an Olympic goal.
