Paris 2024: Faith Kipyegon disqualified in 5000m final, stripped off silver medal for shoving Ethiopian runner Tsegay

World champion Faith Kipyegon has been denied the chance of winning her first medal at Paris 2024 Olympics, after being disqualified in women's 5000m final.

The legendary Kenyan runner won the silver medal behind behind her compatriot Beatrice Chebet, but was judged to have shoved off Ethiopian star Gudaf Tsegay during the race, thus impacting the latter's chances of having a podium finish.

Chebet conveniently won the race in 14:28.56 to bring home Kenya's first gold medal at the Paris Olympics, strongly finishing ahead of Kipyegon who clocked a Season's Best (SB) of 14:29.60, as Netherland's Sifan Hassan also ran a SB of 14:30.61 for the bronze medal.

Unfortunately, after the race, the 1500m World Record (WR) holder's performance was disqualified for shoving Tsegay in the race in a controversial circumstance.

After disqualification, Hassan was moved up to the silver medal position, with initial fourth-place finisher Nadia Battocletti now the bronze medallist.

Kipyegon is expected to appeal the disqualification and still have her focus on defending her Olympic 1500m title.
