Onyango leads the Sundowns cast as players return for pre-season training

Enough of the holidays; it’s back to business for Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of the new season.

The players reported back to Chloorkop, Masandawana’s training base, on Friday as they underwent tests before getting into the program head-on.

Head coach Rulani Mokwena who recently signed a four-year contract extension, hopes to reciprocate his side’s performance last season.

Especially in the league, where they won the Dstv Premiership title with seven games to spare.

The Brazilians haven’t been as active on the transfer market side, signing winger Lesiba Nku from Marrumo Gallants.

Onyango Future

With his current contract running out, Onyango reporting back for preseason is a huge indication that the former Uganda Cranes captain is looking to extend his stay with Mamelodi Sundowns as the confirmation comes along.

The 38-year-old shot-stopper last season played second fiddle to Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams as he managed only five appearances across all competitions but is raring to go again ahead of the new campaign.

"The medical team is happy with me, my goals are to be part of the team to win as many trophies as I can and stay in shape to be ready for any action," He told the club media. 

"Its good to see that everybody is back in shape and ready for action."

‘Onyiso’ is the most decorated PSL footballer, having won ten league titles; he also has won numerous individual accolades, including the PSL goalkeeper of the season thrice and the CAF African-based player of the year (2016).

The 2016 CAF Champions League win ranks highest of all his achievements, three Nedbank Cup titles and two Telkom Knockout titles.

Onyango joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2011 but was loaned out in 2013 to Bidvest Wits before returning the following season, becoming the number-one goalkeeper for up to eight seasons.

Rulani Mokwena’s side hopes to claim the elusive second CAF Champions League title this season.
