‘One mistake can change everything’ - Nigerian legend tells Super Eagles to stay focused against Algeria
The Super Eagles have been in ruthless form at the 2025 AFCON, securing a perfect record in the tournament.
They topped their group with victories over Tanzania (2-1), Tunisia (3-2), and Uganda (3-1) before dismantling Mozambique 4-0 in the round of 16.
Algeria, however, presents a stern challenge. They have been equally efficient, extending their own winning streak and advancing to the quarter-finals after a hard-fought extra-time victory over DR Congo.
Garba Lawal warns Super Eagles
Despite an impressive and dominant run to the last eight, Lawal believes the slightest mistake could prove costly against the formidable Desert Warriors.
Lawal, who won three AFCON bronze medals with Nigeria, emphasised that the match in Marrakesh will likely be decided by fine margins.
"Nigeria have looked organised, disciplined and mentally strong," the former Nigerian player told the Punch.
"But at this stage, one individual mistake can change everything. The team must stay focused because every opponent left in the competition has quality."
The fixture is also shadowed by recent history. Algeria famously defeated Nigeria in the 2019 semi-final, courtesy of a last-minute Riyad Mahrez free kick, on their way to lifting the trophy.
For Nigeria, the goal is to secure a fourth continental title and build on their legacy as the most consistent medal-winning nation in AFCON history.
Meanwhile, Former Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has warned the Super Eagles to prepare for their toughest test yet when they face Algeria this weekend.
