Ola Aina: Lung-busting display earns Super Eagles defender plaudits at Nottingham ​Forest

Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina has received widespread acclaim following a masterful performance in his side's 2-0 victory over Brentford on Sunday. 

The versatile full-back, who is currently working his way back to full match fitness after a lengthy injury layoff, proved to be a decisive factor at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Despite concerns regarding his endurance after spending three months on the sidelines, Aina completed another full 90 minutes against the Bees.

His presence was felt at both ends of the pitch, notably providing a looping cross in the 12th minute that allowed Igor Jesus to score the opening goal.

The Nigerian international provided a statistical masterclass in defensive positioning and resilience throughout the encounter. 

Throughout the match, Aina registered nine defensive contributions, including five clearances and eight ball recoveries. 

He also recorded a vital block as Forest secured a clean sheet to move five points clear of the relegation zone.

Fans noted the strong partnership developing between Aina and Serbian defender Nikola Milenkovic, with the latter reportedly benefitting significantly from Aina’s tactical awareness on the right flank.

Aina’s return comes at a critical time for Sean Dyche's team. Having missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations due to a hamstring injury, the defender appears to be regaining the form that made him a mainstay in the team prior to his setback.

While his manager has remained cautious regarding his fitness levels, Aina’s "lung-busting" run to secure the assist for the first goal suggested he is ahead of schedule. 

His ability to maintain defensive discipline against Kevin Schade and Rico Henry, even while visibly fatigued in the latter stages of the match, has solidified his reputation as one of the most reliable full-backs in the Premier League.
