Kenya is racing against time to have stadiums ready not just for the 2024 Africa Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) but also for athletics events.

Nyayo and Kasarani Stadiums have been closed for renovations since last year with a focus on being ready for CHAN 2024 that will be staged in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in August.

However, the two facilities also have the only World Athletics-approved tracks, meaning key athletics events can only be held there.

Now, with the 2025 Kip Keino Classic set to be staged on May 31, Nyayo Stadium has been earmarked to host the World Athletics Continental Tour once again and work is underway on the tartan track which will get a complete makeover.

The old tartan track has been removed with the debris cleared before a grader was brought in to level the surface in preparation for the installation of a brand-new track.

The track is projected to be in place before the Kip Keino Classic is staged and there is confidence that everything will move with speed ahead of the continental event.

Nyayo Stadium has staged two matches, Harambee Stars against Gabon and the Mashemeji Derby both in March, which were used as test events to gauge its preparedness to host CHAN, and athletics will get a feel at the end of May during the Kip Keino Classic.
