Not Man City — Arsenal legend warns Arteta about dangerous club as Gunners seek title defence
Arsenal legend David Seaman has issued a stark warning to Mikel Arteta, identifying Liverpool as the primary threat to the club's ongoing Premier League title defense.
The Gunners are overwhelmingly viewed as the early favourites to retain the English crown after comfortably dispatching Coventry City in their 2026/27 opener.
If successful, Arteta's men would achieve Arsenal's first successful league title defense in 92 years, a historic feat the club last accomplished back in the 1934/35 campaign.
Arsenal rivals facing instability
Arsenal's status as runaway favourites is bolstered by the sheer instability currently plaguing their traditional title rivals.
Manchester City, who finished second last season, are navigating a transitional period following the departure of manager Pep Guardiola and several key squad members.
Their vulnerabilities were immediately exposed earlier this month when Arsenal comfortably defeated them to lift the 2026 FA Community Shield.
Meanwhile, Manchester United's own domestic ambitions took an instant hit following a debilitating 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City on Saturday.
Seaman backs Liverpool
Despite the chaos surrounding their rivals, Seaman believes Liverpool are quietly assembling a squad capable of pushing Arsenal to the absolute limit.
Speaking to the media, the iconic goalkeeper explained that the Anfield outfit possesses the depth to mount a serious challenge under their new leadership.
"We’ve not seen Liverpool yet with their new manager and their new signings," Seaman explained. "I did think Man United were going to be a lot better than what I’ve seen today, so that’s been disappointing."
He noted that Manchester City's underwhelming display at Wembley completely shifted his early-season expectations.
"The City result against Arsenal in the Community Shield that really disappointed me, so that threw me a little bit," he added.
"So I’m looking at Liverpool, I still think City will be strong, but I’m going for Liverpool," Seaman declared. "We’re waiting to see what sort of system he plays. I just think Liverpool have got a bit more quality and quality in depth that will see them, hopefully, get second."
