Nairobi county government unveil plans to build a sports academy

Nairobi County Youth, Talent, and Sports Chief Officer Oscar Igaida is keen to execute Governor Johnson Sakaja's manifesto to establish a Sports Academy in the county with an aim of nurturing budding talents.

Igaida noted that they will be keen to implement the governor's manifesto which aims to identify, nurture, and develop talent.

“The county is taking sports very seriously and we intend to open an academy that will develop all types of sports,” he said.

During the 2023 Kenya Inter County Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) Games, Nairobi county was represented in 21 disciplines.

The youngsters performed exceptionally well which saw the county emerge as the overall winners beating Kisumu, the hosts.

With such massive talents, Igaida told KBC that they are planning to promote sports including football, volleyball, and basketball among other disciplines.

He added that they will be staging tournaments to identify young players who have a talent. 

“Through the tournaments, we shall identify the young men and women who are talented. We hope they will benefit through the Governor’s scholarship. We also intend to help them in their education and mentor them,” he said.

He revealed that the main aim of the initiative is to export talent or have the players join active clubs in the country.

“We have started with the capacity building where netball coaches and umpires have been undergoing some training,” he said.
