Manchester City not in Madrid for revenge, Pep Guardiola declares
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has rubbished claims that his Cityzens are in Madrid for revenge.
Guardiola’s City and Real Madrid lock horns on the semi-final of the 2023 UEFA Champions League, UCL, at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The clash between the two is a repeat of last season encounter when both sides also met at the same stage of the competition.
Los Blancos overcame City in a dramatic second leg to overturn a 4-3 defeat from the first leg en route to lifting their 14th crown.
That defeat has fueled suggestions that City will face the defending champions with revenge on their minds on Tuesday.
Guardiola rubbishes revenge talk
Ahead of the encounter on Tuesday night, there are suggestions that City will go for revenge against the holders after what happened between the last year at the same stage of the competition.
However, in a swift reaction, his manager has come out to throw that suggestion into the bin with the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss saying that his side are in Madrid to get a good result.
"It would be a huge mistake to think we are here for revenge, we are not,” Guardiola said according to Flash score.
“We must face it as another opportunity (to reach the final)," Guardiola told a news conference.
"We are here to get a good result because everything will be decided in Manchester, not here.”
On what happened the last time both teams clashed in the Champions League, Pep added;
"What happened last season happened, period. This is another opportunity, nothing more. We come with the mentality of trying again, knowing that to achieve it, we have to be better.
"The best lesson we can take from last season is that we are not coming here for revenge, but for a good result. And to have the final open for Manchester."
