Liverpool have been left anxiously awaiting medical confirmation after record-signing Alexander Isak suffered a serious-looking injury during Saturday’s 2–1 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

According to reports, early fears are that the striker may have broken his leg in the ill-fated challenge while scoring for the Reds.

Isak injured while opening the scoring in north London

The 26-year-old Sweden international was introduced at half-time in place of Conor Bradley and made an immediate impact at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Isak opened the scoring in the 56th minute with a composed finish from a well-weighted Florian Wirtz pass, but his goal was instantly overshadowed by injury.

After striking the ball, Isak was caught by a sliding challenge from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven and landed awkwardly on his lower leg.

The forward was visibly distressed, unable to celebrate with teammates, and required lengthy treatment on the pitch before being helped off by two members of Liverpool’s medical staff. Jeremie Frimpong replaced him as concerns quickly grew over the severity of the damage.

Liverpool fear the injury could be a broken leg, an issue that would typically rule a player out for several months. The Athletic has reported that the club already believes Isak has sustained a significant leg injury, with full assessments still ongoing.

Potential blow for Slot as Liverpool’s attacking depth is tested

A long-term absence for Isak would represent a major setback for both the player and Liverpool. Signed for a club-record £125 million from Newcastle United in the summer, the striker has endured a frustrating start to life at Anfield, with fitness issues and inconsistent form limiting his impact.

His goal against Spurs was only his second in the Premier League this season, coming just as he appeared to be building momentum.

Head coach Arne Slot remained cautiously optimistic after the match, praising the link-up between Isak and Wirtz while urging patience. “Let’s not be too negative yet. We don’t know yet, let’s hope he is back with us soon,” Slot said.

However, the timing could not be worse. Mohamed Salah is away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Cody Gakpo is recovering from a muscle injury, and Liverpool’s attacking options are already stretched. While Hugo Ekitike is in strong form, Slot may now be forced to rely heavily on the 23-year-old or consider January reinforcements should Isak face an extended spell on the sidelines.
