Joshua Cheptegei mourns World Marathon record holder Kiptum after nasty accident claimed his life
Ugandan long-distance runner and 5,000 and 10,000-metre world record holder Joshua Cheptegei has eulogized marathon guru and Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum.
The marathon world record holder, Kiptum, who had taken the long-distance running world by storm, perished in a car accident along with his coach, Gervais Hakizimana.
"I am so heartbroken and shocked to learn of the saddening news of the passing of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana," Cheptegei took to his X (formerly Twitter).
"My condolences to both families, friends and all the athletics fans around the globe.
(The) road accident has robbed us of such a great talent."

According to Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commandant Peter Mulinge, the tragedy occurred on the Eldoret-Kaptagat road in Kenya.
After twice clocking two hours and one minute for the marathon in 2022 and 2023, Kiptum shattered Kenyan icon Eliud Kipchoge's world record by smashing the 2023 Chicago Marathon in 2:00:35. Kipchoge's world record was 2:01:09.
