'It's all over now' — Super Eagles star delights at return from injury that ruled him out of AFCON
Super Eagles and Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu is finally back where he truly belongs, on the pitch.
After more than four months on the sidelines, the Super Eagles defender made his long-awaited return to competitive action for Werder Bremen, putting an end to an injury nightmare that also cost him a place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Agu reflects on brutal injury spell and emotional comeback
Agu featured in Bremen’s narrow 1–0 loss to Freiburg, but the result mattered far less than the moment itself.
The 26-year-old had been out since suffering a painful syndesmosis injury earlier in the season, picked up when an opponent landed awkwardly on his ankle during a clash with FC St. Pauli.
The recovery process was anything but smooth. Speaking after the game, Agu opened up on how difficult the period was, both physically and mentally.
“It was tough because it became clear relatively quickly that it would take longer again. Especially with the surgery, I was then stuck in that shoe, on crutches, for six weeks. I couldn't do much. That was a really hard time,” he said.
Now fully fit, the relief is obvious for Agu, who said, “I’m really happy that it’s all over now and I can be back on the pitch and have fun.”
Bremen struggles continue, but Agu sees signs of belief returning
While Agu’s comeback is a personal win, Werder Bremen’s broader situation remains tense. The club is currently stuck in an eleven-game winless run and hovering dangerously close to the relegation places.
Still, Agu pointed to a noticeable shift behind the scenes following recent changes in the coaching setup.
“There was a lot of intensity in training, we had some good routines. Basically, what you expect after a coaching change, because everyone senses their opportunity and gives it their all.”
He admitted the spark hasn’t fully translated into matchday results yet, adding, “I thought it would carry over even more into the game, but the belief has to come back first.”
For Bremen, Agu’s return brings experience and calm to a shaky defence—and for the player himself, it marks a fresh start after a long, frustrating road back.
