Injury-stricken Maina misses as struggling Cologne are thrashed by Xavi Simons-inspired Leipzig
Harambee Stars prospect Linton Maina played no part in Cologne’s 3-1 thrashing to RB Leipzig in a Bundesliga encounter that took place on Friday night.
Maina, who is born to a Kenyan father and a German mother, missed the game through an injury yet to be defined as per Transfermarkt, and last played for the club during their 3-3 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach a week ago, where he was withdrawn after 65 minutes.
Maina has scored one goal and registered two assists so far this season. He registered three goals and seven assists the season prior.
Earlier this season, he had missed their opening match againsty Borussia Dortmund due to a back problem but has been available since and will be hoping he can be available again as soon as possible as Cologne battle for survival.
Leipzig are on 49 points, two ahead of Borussia Dortmund, who host Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. Cologne are 16th in the relegation playoff spot with 18 points.
Leipzig's Xavi Simons struck in the 15th minute but the home side equalised three minutes later when Sargis Adamyan met Eric Martel's header following a corner kick.
The visitors went ahead again in the 63rd as Simmons crossed for Lois Openda to score and the Belgian netted again four minutes later with a fine header for his 19th league goal of the season.
Amadou Haidara then made it 4-1 with a long-range effort in the 70th minute before substitute Yussuf Poulsen wrapped up the resounding victory eight minutes from the end.
