"I'm going to tear it up in pre-season" - Amorim's new signing makes promise to Man United fans
In a move that largely flew under the radar, Manchester United reached a pre-agreement with Diego León last January.
The full-back, arriving from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteño, is set to join Ruben Amorim's squad for pre-season training and has high expectations.
What Diego said
Speaking to Paraguayan outlet Versus, via Abola, before departing for England, León discussed his impending move to Manchester United: "I'm very happy; I think every player dreams of this. When you're a professional, you need to adapt quickly, and this is a great opportunity."
"Everyone thinks I'll go out on loan, but I don't have that in mind," he stated, revealing his confidence for the challenge ahead. "I'm going to tear it up in pre-season, and in one or two games, I'll be playing with the first team."
A Paraguayan youth international, León is a left-back who could potentially slot into the left wing-back role in Amorim's 3-4-3 system at United. That position has been occupied by Patrick Dorgu, a January signing from Lecce for €30 million. Despite his age, León has impressed in 42 appearances for Cerro Porteño's first team.
Manchester United's first pre-season test is against Leeds on July 19th. Further matches are scheduled against West Ham, Bournemouth, Everton, and Fiorentina. It remains to be seen whether León will have the opportunity to impress the Portuguese manager in any of these games.
