'I would love to have him back' — Guardiola emotional about ex-Manchester City star
Pep Guardiola has expressed a mix of admiration and acceptance regarding Julian Álvarez’s departure, acknowledging the Argentine striker’s stellar form since joining Atlético Madrid.
Speaking after City's Premier League win over Everton, Guardiola confirmed he understands why Alvarez sought a move away from the Etihad in 2024, despite the club's success.“Maybe I’d love to have him… but I understand why he left,” Guardiola told reporters.
The Argentina international, who won every major trophy except the Carabao Cup during his two-year stint at City, sought more consistent minutes as a leading striker.
His desire to be the focal point of a top European club led him to Atlético, where he has since validated that decision by scoring 29 goals for the Spanish side last season, thriving under manager Diego Simeone.
Guardiola praised Álvarez’s current success, which has seen him emerge as one of LaLiga’s top goalscorers:
“Julian Álvarez is top. That’s why now he’s at one of the best clubs in the world, Atleti, playing for a top-class manager, players, performing unbelievably.”
Manchester City struggled last season, especially with Erling Haaland suffering an injury mid-way through the season, prompting the signing of Omar Marmoush from Frankfurt.
