I will sack him — Barcelona presidential candidate reveals plans for Hansi Flick and Deco
Barcelona’s presidential candidate, Victor Font, has promised to retain Hansi Flick as the club's head coach; however, he stated that he will replace Deco as the club’s sporting director.
The club’s presidential elections are scheduled for March 15, with incumbent Joan Laporta seeking re-election and a competitive field of challengers emerging, including former candidate Victor Font, Xavi Vilajoana and Marc Ciria.
What Font said
Font is a Barcelona member and businessman who finished second to Laporta in the 2021 presidential contest. He has formally announced his 2026 bid as the primary alternative to the current administration, promising structural and sporting reforms
As part of his campaign, Font has made clear that he would not retain Deco as Barcelona’s sporting director if elected, dubbing the current structure too closely tied to Laporta and calling for a revised department better suited to support head coach Hansi Flick.
Font told Catalan media that while Flick would remain his coach, Deco would be replaced. "If I become the president, Flick would still be our coach, but Deco won't be the sporting director," he said.
The comments follow a wave of politically motivated criticisms of Joan Laporta and his cabinet, while his remark about Hansi Flick signals widespread acceptance of the German coach by the club’s fans.
Despite Font’s stance on his employment, Flick has endorsed Joan Laporta, crediting the Catalan lawyer for bringing his dreams to fruition. He also reacted to Font’s plans to sack Deco, saying, "I'm very happy with the situation with Deco. He lets us work and we know exactly what to do. I didn't have this before and I really appreciate it."
