‘I thought you were going to be jobless in July’ - Bassey demands his £600 from Cairney after signing new contract
On Friday, Fulham confirmed that their long-serving captain had signed a new deal, putting an end to speculation about his future at Craven Cottage.
The 33-year-old Scottish midfielder, a club icon since his arrival from Blackburn Rovers in 2015, has committed to the club until the summer of 2025, with an option for a further year.
With Cairney's previous contract set to expire at the end of the season, there had been uncertainty over whether the club would retain his services or look to younger options.
Bassey teases Cairney
In a lighthearted reaction to the news of his contract extension, Bassey took to social media to poke fun at his captain.
Commenting on Fulham's official announcement, the defender wrote: "Ayy, my £600 please send it back. I thought you were going to be jobless in July!"
Bassey's playful jab implies he had given Cairney money as a farewell gift, jokingly assuming the captain would be unemployed when his contract ran out.
The comment highlights the strong team spirit within the Fulham dressing room, where Bassey and fellow Nigerian Alex Iwobi are known for their lively personalities.
Meanwhile, Fulham secured a 2-1 victory over Brighton on Saturday, coming from behind to claim the win.
Samuel Chukwueze, who returned from the Africa Cup of Nations alongside Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey, came in as a substitute to score the first goal, kickstarting the comeback.
In the 90th minute, Harry Wilson completed the comeback with a sublime freekick to clinch the victory for the Cottagers.
