I see myself like Rüdiger - Super Eagles-eligible star, delighted to be compared to Madrid defender
Marcandalli's career has seen a remarkable rise over the last year. After playing in Serie B with Venezia last season, he has established himself as a key figure in Genoa's defence, appearing in 24 of their 30 league matches this term.
The 24-year-old centre-back has been a solid presence. His reliability is further highlighted by the fact that he has committed only two errors leading to a goal all season.
His contributions have been vital for Genoa, who currently sit 13th in the Serie A table with 33 points. With eight games left, the team is targeting around nine more points to secure their top-flight status for another season.
Flattered by Rüdiger's comparison
Genoa's coach, Daniele De Rossi, has been vocal in his admiration for Marcandalli's performances, recently likening the Italian-Nigerian defender to the formidable Antonio Rüdiger.
Responding to the praise, Marcandalli expressed his gratitude but acknowledged he still has work to do.
"I was very pleased with the praise; it gives me fuel to continue my work," Marcandalli stated. "I remember the first Rüdiger in Rome; he was a complete defender.
“I see myself in that, but I need to improve in some areas: he was aggressive and good with the ball."
He added, "I need to be the best version of myself. There will be important points at stake against Juve; we'll have to prepare well for this match."
Marcandalli will be looking to help his side secure a positive result this weekend as Genoa faces a tough challenge against Champions League hopefuls Juventus at the Allianz Stadium.
