Chelsea’s summer gamble on Alejandro Garnacho could prove inspired, with club legend Roberto Di Matteo backing the winger to become a bargain signing despite his controversial Manchester United departure.

Once considered one of the brightest young talents at Old Trafford, the 21-year-old Argentina international was shipped out following a falling-out with former United manager Ruben Amorim.

Now, Chelsea have offered him a clean slate, paying £40 million ($54m) to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

What Di Matteo said

While Garnacho’s attitude has been questioned, his ability has never been in doubt and Di Matteo is confident he will thrive in west London under head coach Enzo Maresca.

“I don’t think he can rock the boat at Chelsea, there is a good group, a good team environment. Also, the manager has a good grip on the team,” Di Matteo told GOAL via BetVictor Online Casino.

The Italian acknowledged Garnacho’s youth and urged patience as the winger matures both on and off the pitch.

He added, “Let’s not forget he is only young, 21, so still needs to learn and mature as a person and as a football player. Sometimes when you are young you can make some mistakes, he just needs to learn from that. He’s coming into a team with a good hierarchy, they can help him to fulfil his potential.”

Di Matteo believes Chelsea could look back on the deal as a bargain if the Argentine hits his peak.

“You can see that he has a tonne of potential and if he can manage to grow and develop and become the player that he thinks he is and we all hope he can be, then it becomes a bargain to sign him for that price,” he said.

With Chelsea investing heavily in young attackers such as Estevao Willian, Joao Pedro and Garnacho will need to prove himself quickly.

But under Maresca’s guidance, the Blues are confident they now have another match-winner capable of lighting up Stamford Bridge.
