‘Hope they bring us joy like tonight’ - Griezmann pleased with Lookman’s spectacular debut for Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid finalised the €40 million transfer of Lookman, with the player signing a contract that runs for four and a half years.
Lookman made an immediate impact in his first appearance for the club, scoring one goal and providing an assist as Atletico Madrid dismantled Real Betis 5-0 to advance to the Copa del Rey semi-finals.
The winter signing was a constant threat from the outset, troubling the Betis defence with his intelligent runs, quick footwork, and tireless work rate.
Griezmann hails Lookman
Griezmann, who was on the receiving end of Lookman's assist, praised the welcoming atmosphere within the squad that helps new players settle in quickly.
"We're a team, a dressing room, a club, and a very welcoming fanbase," Griezmann told Marca.
"Everyone who arrives is welcomed from the very first second, and we see that with the new arrivals. Let's enjoy the new players and hope they bring us joy like tonight."
The former Barcelona star also touched on the tactical approach that allowed Atletico's attack to flourish.
"We moved around a lot off the ball to provide solutions for the player with the ball, and that makes for a more fluid game," he explained.
"Tactical order is key, and that's how the chances and the style of play we're looking for appear."
Lookman announced his arrival in style, racing past the Betis defence in the 37th minute and slotting the ball into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.
His creative influence continued after halftime when he delivered a perfectly weighted pass for Griezmann to fire home Atletico's fourth goal from the edge of the area.
