‘He is not the same player anymore’ - Ex-Ghana coach raises concern about Lookman's form
Lookman has been a standout performer for Atalanta in both Serie A and the UEFA Champions League.
However, he has struggled with his performance for the national team and will be crucial to Nigeria's hopes at the 2025 AFCON.
The 28-year-old forward's last goals for the Super Eagles were a brace in a 3-0 qualifying victory against Benin Republic on September 7, 2024.
Le Roy speaks on Lookman’s form
Following Lookman’s dip in form for the Super Eagles, Le Roy has expressed his concern about the attacker's performance
"Lookman, when he comes back to the Nigeria national team, is not quite the same player anymore," Le Roy commented during an interview with Canal+.
However, the veteran coach acknowledged that the Atalanta star is showing signs of a resurgence.
"We get the impression that in the last few matches with his club, he is starting to get a little bit comfortable," Le Roy observed. "We are starting to see him again in certain plays. He is finding life a little easier."
Despite his critique of Lookman, Le Roy still considers Nigeria a major contender for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. "So yes, Nigeria remains one of the favourites for the AFCON after Morocco," he affirmed.
Recognised as a key player for his country, the former African Footballer of the Year has been named in coach Eric Chelle’s 54-man provisional squad for the tournament in Morocco.
As the competition approaches, Lookman will be under pressure to translate his impressive club form into consistent, high-level performances for the Super Eagles.
