Gor Mahia And AFC Leopards Issued Stern Warning As Kasarani Stadium Set To Roar Back With Mashemeji Derby Clash
FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia and bitter rivals AFC Leopards have been put on notice ahead of their highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby clash at the Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.
This comes on the back of the chaos witnessed during Gor Mahia’s recent outing against Shabana at Gusii Stadium on Sunday.
FKF Issues Warning
The Football Kenya Federation has warned both clubs of stern action if the chaos witnessed at Gusii is repeated at Kasarani on Sunday.
“Kasarani will be hosting the Mashemeji Derby this weekend and the federation is involved in planning for the game with hosts Gor Mahia, more so concerning the security of fans, match officials, and all who will be at the stadium,” said FKF Secretary Harold Ndege at a press conference on Tuesday as quoted by Nation Sports.
“We don’t want a repeat of what happened at Gusii and both sets of fans should maintain a high level of discipline. I want to promise that security will be on another level and anybody who wants to cause chaos will be dealt with. On this, we will be monitoring every situation,” said Ndege, warning both sets of fans.
Past Incidents in the Mashemeji Derby
The Gusii Stadium incident saw scores injured as Shabana and Gor Mahia fans clashed in a chaos-infested match.
The incident has raised concern in the conduct of high-risk fixtures such as the Mashemeji Derby, which has had its fair share of chaos in the past.
The tense fixture is poised to be Kasarani’s opener since its closure for renovations in 2023 after being earmarked for the 2024 African Nations Championship and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The uneventful first leg was held at the Nyayo Stadium on March 30, which ended in a barren draw with minimal fan confrontation.
