Instead, the Malian tactician has opted for a bold approach, handing first senior call-ups to players such as Tochukwu Nnadi, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, and Croatia-based forward Salim Fago Lawal, signaling a shift toward rebuilding with fresh talent.

What Onazi said

Speaking to Footy Africa, Onazi drew parallels between the current squad and Nigeria’s triumphant 2013 AFCON team, of which he was an integral part.

“Just like our team in 2013, we had many new players which made people not believe in us. We knew we had a huge task in front of us, and we decided to give it our best. We were able to lift the title. I expect the same from this set of players,” the former Lazio midfielder said.

Onazi urged the players to shut out external criticism and focus fully on the task ahead.

“Forget about what anyone thinks and go hard, real hard, to try and win the title. Once you wear that jersey, it does not matter when you play. What matters is your heart,” he added.

The AFCON 2013 winner also emphasised commitment and national pride as key ingredients for success, reminding the players of the responsibility that comes with representing Nigeria.

“Give your all to the team and remember that you are representing the whole of Nigeria. More than 200 million people are looking up to you. Just do your best and leave everything on the pitch,” Onazi said.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group C of AFCON 2025 alongside Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda.

The Super Eagles will begin their campaign against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars on Tuesday, December 23, in Fez, as they chase a fourth continental crown and seek redemption after recent disappointments.
