FKF President Promises Exciting Build-Up for Harambee Stars Ahead of AFCON 2027

Football Kenya Federation president Hussein Mohammed has outlined plans to ensure the Harambee Stars are ready for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.

Kenya will be co-hosting the continental event alongside Uganda and Tanzania, and as hosts, Hussein Mohammed wants Harambee Stars to make a mark, with preparations starting as early as 2026.

The last time the Harambee Stars competed in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was at the 2019 tournament held in Egypt. They were drawn in Group C alongside Senegal, Algeria, and Tanzania.

Harambee Stars ultimately finished third in their group after recording one victory, a thrilling 3-2 win against East African rivals Tanzania, and two losses against eventual finalists Senegal and champions Algeria, which resulted in their elimination at the group stage.

Hussein Mohammed Reveals Plans for Harambee Stars in 2026

Hussein Mohammed said the focus is now firmly on preparations for AFCON 2027, noting that there is a great deal to anticipate.

He explained that plans are in place to host high-level friendly matches for the Harambee Stars at home, with the aim of giving fans a unique and memorable experience.

The FKF president added that the upcoming period promises to be an exciting one for Kenyan football as the build-up continues.

“We are preparing for AFCON 2027. So, there's a lot to look forward to. We will now bring competitive friendlies for the Harambee Stars home,” Hussein Mohammed said during the Donholm Seniors Gala Night at Weston Hotel.

“We want them to be played here on home soil. So we give fans an experience like they have never seen before and never had before. And it's going to be very, very exciting 2026 for Kenya.”

“In 2026, we've got a lot to look forward to. You've got the women who've qualified for AFCON in Morocco in March. You've got the preparations that are coming up as well,” he added.

Meanwhile, Harambee Starlets successfully sealed their qualification for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, a historic return to the continental stage after nine years. Their previous appearance was in 2016.

The team navigated a tough qualifying campaign under coach Beldine Odemba, demonstrating impressive resilience and tactical maturity.

Their qualification was ultimately secured with a commanding 4-1 aggregate victory over The Gambia in the final round of the playoffs.
