The former Manchester United forward, who enjoyed a prolific debut season in France last term, opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Lorient’s Darlin Yongwa was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Michael Amir Murillo.

Greenwood made no mistake from 12 yards, calmly slotting home his second league goal of the season.

Minutes later, the 22-year-old turned provider, setting up Benjamin Pavard to double Marseille’s lead in the 20th minute. The French giants never looked back, as they cruised to a convincing victory under Robert De Zerbi.

Greenwood has now registered five goal contributions already this season, having scored once and assisted twice in Marseille’s earlier clash with Paris FC.

His blistering form is a continuation of last season, when he finished as joint-top scorer in Ligue 1 alongside Ousmane Dembele, silencing doubts over his adaptation to French football.
