Following Gor Mahia's commanding 3-0 win over Mara Sugar, the Ghanaian coach emphasised that indiscipline has no place in his squad.

He made it clear that opportunities will only be granted to players who consistently meet the club's high standards both on and off the pitch.

Charles Akonnor's comments shed light on why Siraj Mohammed had been conspicuously absent from the starting lineup since the 2025/26 season began in September, despite frequently being included in the matchday squad. The coach stressed that dedication to training is a non-negotiable requirement for any player aiming for a consistent role.

The former Bandari defender signed for K’Ogalo in August after representing Kenya at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

His lack of game time had become a hot topic among fans, many of whom questioned why the experienced left-footer was sidelined while promising youngster Bryton Onyona established himself in the team.

However, these concerns were temporarily quieted on Sunday, January 18, when the defender finally made his debut, appearing as a late substitute in the victory that sent Gor Mahia back to the top of the league table with 33 points.

"We want to give every player time to play and build their confidence, but players have to be disciplined in terms of what we want," Akonnor stated as quoted by Mozzart Sport.

"If you do not meet those standards, you find yourself out. Today, it was good to give Siraj some minutes, even though they were minimal. He has to be serious in training and do the right things."

Gor Mahia Coach Explains Why He Benched Felix Oluoch

The former Ghana Black Stars coach also clarified his decision to substitute top scorer Felix Oluoch early in the second half, revealing it was a precautionary measure due to a nagging injury.

"Felix has an injury that we are managing," Akonnor explained. "He signalled that he was in pain, so we had to take him off as a precaution."

Felix Oluoch had given Gor Mahia the lead with a 14th-minute goal, paving the way for their dominant performance.

Akonnor concluded by commending new signing Jackson Dwang, who impressed on his first start for the club by providing an assist for Musa Shariff's goal.
