Butali Captain reveals biggest lesson taken from Africa Cup for Club Champions

Butali Sugar Warriors Team Captain Constant Wakhura has said their main take out at the just-concluded Africa Cup for Club Champions was gaining more experience.

The Sugar Millers took bronze at the championship while Sharkia of Egypt emerged as champions after edging out Exchequers of Ghana to the title.

The captain, however, noted that they wanted to play in the final. “But I am proud we have gotten something,” he added.

In their third-place playoff match against Police Machine of Nigeria, they came from behind to win 3-2 courtesy of Rana Suhail, Calvin Kanu, and Festus Onyango.

Competing against the crème de la crème clubs from different countries, Wakhura said the team has now gauged where they stand and know what to do going forward.

“We have achieved a lot of experience. When we go back for training, we know the areas to address. We had to fight for each other and I am proud we worked together and won,” he said.

Wakhura revealed that they might take a one-week break before resuming training for the 2023 Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) season league.

Meanwhile, in the women’s category, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) were crowned champions after gunnering 13 points ahead of compatriots, Army Ladies, who also had 13 points but with an inferior goal difference.

Nigeria’s Delta Queens clinched bronze with 11 points as Kenya’s Lakers settled for fourth place.
