Bundesliga giants react to Barcelona's interest in their star defender
Borussia Dortmund have reportedly made a move to counter Barcelona's interest in star centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck, as they are keen on keeping the Germany international within their ranks.
Schlotterbeck, 25, is one of the top-rated centre-backs in world football. He ordinarily would be prized at a ridiculous amount, given his talent level; however, he will have one year left on his contract by summer, giving him leverage to determine his future.
Barcelona's interest
With the unexpected exit of Inigo Martinez, Barcelona saw their defensive depth deplete. The Spaniard's exit has been a destabilising factor, forcing Hansi Flick to experiment with different centre-back combinations with his available options.
A signing in defence is expected to be a priority for the Blaugrana in January or the summer, and according to Spanish sources, Schlotterbeck is high up their list. The player is also keen to join.
Dortmund to run interference
According to GFNS, relaying a report from BILD, Dortmund are aware of the interest in Schlotterbeck from Barcelona and other top European clubs.
Sporting director Sebastian Kehl is said to have contacted the player’s entourage with a contract renewal which guarantees a significant pay bump. According to the report, Nico currently earns €2.5 million annually, and the renewal offer is around €8 million.
