Barcelona fans were hit with a bombshell news yesterday that one of their starting centre-backs from the domestic treble winning 2024/25 campaign, Inigo Martinez, will be leaving to join Al Nassr.
The details
After multiple Catalan and Spanish outlets circulated the rumours, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Barcelona defender Inigo Martinez will join Saudi Pro League outfit, Al Nassr.
Inigo only recently signed a one-year extension back in March, and was expected to reprise his role as the starting Blaugrana defender for the coming season.
However, he is now set to join Faris Najd on a free transfer. According to Fabrizio, Inigo had an agreement with Barcelona to be allowed to leave for free this summer should he get an offer from overseas; hence, the Blaugrana will get compensation.
Why this deal happened
At the time of writing, there is no clear indication of the party that pushed for the deal, however, it comes at a convenient moment for the Blaugrana.
Barcelona are currently struggling to register their new signings: Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford. They initially hoped to exploit Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury to register their signings; however, the goalkeeper has refused to release his medical documents which is a necessity for the process.
With Inigo’s exit, Barcelona will have a reported €14 million freed off from their wagebill, opening up space to register Rashford and Joan Garcia with LALIGA.
