Bayern Munich vs Chelsea: Kane humbles World Champions as Blues begin UCL campaign with a loss
Harry Kane was at the double for Bayern Munich as the German champions humbled Chelsea 3-1 in their first Champions League match of the 2025/26 season.
The England captain and record scorer was on target from the spot and scored a brilliant finish to add to an own goal by Trevor Chalobah, while Cole Palmer got the only goal for Chelsea.
Bayern Munich vs Chelsea: How it happened
Chelsea, returning to Europe’s elite competition after success in the Conference League and Club World Cup, began brightly through Malo Gusto and Cole Palmer.
However, Bayern struck first when Michael Olise’s dangerous delivery forced Trevoh Chalobah into an unfortunate own goal.
The hosts soon doubled their lead as Kane won a penalty following a tussle with Moisés Caicedo and confidently converted from the spot for his 24th successful Bayern penalty in 25 attempts.
Chelsea responded swiftly, with Palmer capping a superb solo run and exchange with Gusto by rifling into the top corner, cutting the deficit before half-time.
Chelsea pushed after the break but failed to make their pressure count, allowing Bayern to reassert control.
Robert Sánchez kept the Blues alive with impressive saves from Kane and Olise, yet he was powerless when Gusto’s stray pass fell to Kane, who clinically fired home his second.
Chelsea’s misfortune continued with Palmer’s late strike ruled offside, leaving them empty-handed. Bayern’s win preserved their perfect record and reinforced hopes of surpassing recent quarter-final disappointments.
