Aston Villa made Newcastle United look ordinary, Premier League legend declares
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has praised Aston Villa for making his former side look ordinary during their Premier League tie on Saturday.
Aston Villa joined the race for Champions League football after a dominant win over Newcastle United at Villa Park.
Ollie Watkins-inspired Villains destroyed Newcastle 3-0 to move within touching distance of the top four.
Newcastle looked ordinary
Watkins scored two goals and assisted the third to help Villa avenge their defeat in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
The Magpies thrashed the Villians 4-0 at St James’ Park in October but were no match for their hosts on Saturday.
Speaking after the game, Newcastle United legend Shearer noted that Unai Emery’s side put in a performance that made his former club look ordinary on the day.
"Aston Villa made the best defence in the League look very ordinary,” Shearer said, per Premier League.
“They pressed high and aggressively, and every player played out of their skin. The scoreline could easily have been six or seven nil."
Villa revamp
Former Arsenal manager Emery has completely turned around the fortunes at Villa Park since his arrival.
Emery left LaLiga outfit Villarreal back in October to replace sacked Steven Gerrard at Villa Park with the club 17th on the table.
But six months later, the Villains are firmly in the race for European places following an excellent home win over Newcastle.
Inspired by 27-year-old Watkins, only leaders Arsenal have taken more points per game than Villa's 2.11.
